Dr Martin does not accept payment from any Insurance company or other third party payer
(Like Medicaid or Medicare). In order to keep costs down for the uninsured and the increasing
number of patients who have high deductibles, he chooses not to assume the massive
overhead costs of billing third party payers. This has the added benefit of eliminating
bureaucratic hassles and intrusions into the Doctor-Patient relationship, and ensures strict
confidentiality of patient information. It also allows Dr. Martin to spend as much time as
needed with each patient. He no longer has to see one patient every 6 minutes in order to
"meet the over-head".
One thing most people don't realize is this: There are now 4 million "entities" that have access
to all of your medical information, if your Doctor bills an Insurance company. Read the HIPAA
form at your Doctor's office... Basically anyone can see all of your info, as long as they are
willing to pay for it. The only people that can't see your chart are your friends/relatives and
neighbors (Unless they work for the Government, the Insurance Industry, are your employer, or
will pay for the info). This is not your Doctor's fault. In order for your Doctor to accept
Insurance they must play by "the rules". The only way around it is to be stubborn (like me)
and either work for free, or be paid directly by the patient. This, of course, leaves the
middleman out, and they do not like that at all. Your Insurance company wants to know every
detail about you. They use this info to raise your rates, drop you from their plan, and to market
you to various companies that are geared towards whatever happens to be wrong with you.
Example: You go see a Doctor and are diagnosed with High Blood Pressure. Not long after
that you start getting junk mail from the Pharmaceutical industry about various blood pressure
medicines. This is not a coincidence.
At DocMartin's there are only 2 "entities" that can see your chart; I'm one, you're the other...Just
like the old days.
The Government/Insurance bureaucracy has stolen the sacred Doctor/Patient relationship...
Let's steal it back.
